Medical Assistants can demonstrate their knowledge and commitment to professionalism by passing the national exam administered by the Certifying Board of the AAMA and earning the CMA (AAMA) (Certified Medical Assistant) credential.

Certification Requirements Summary
Medical Assistants wishing to qualify for the AAMA Certification Exam must meet the following criteria:
Be a graduate of either a CAAHEP or ABHES accredited medical assisting program.
Be a certified medical assistant and applying for recertifcation by examination
Recertification
To keep the CMA (AAMA) status current, one must re-certify every five years through either re-taking the exam or by obtaining 60 continuing education units (CEUs, i.e.contact hours) per five year period.

You may qualify for recertification by continuing education if you have met the requirements as follows:
Recertification by CEU Category requirements are to equal 60 total Credit hours within a five-year period. At least 30 of these credits must be AAMA approved continuing education credits (CEUs).

Attending your local Chapter monthly meetings & educational sessions - Members attend for free and receive free CEUs!
Attending your local Chapter sponsored workshops & seminars - Members attend at reduced fees and receive free CEUs!
Attending the State and National Convention Education Workshops - Members receive discounted fees and free CEUs!
Completing CEU articles in the CMA Today (formerly the PMA) magazine through AAMA - Members receive discounted fees.
Attending employer provided education workshops and seminars. Keep copies of brochures and certificates of attendance.
Attending accredited education workshops and seminars through your local college. Keep copies of syllabi and certificate of attendance or transcripts.
Attending local community workshops, classes, and seminars available in your area. Keep copies of brochures and certificates of attendance.
All AAMA Sponsored CEUs are recorded on membership transcripts and are available through the AAMA Website.
